Monday Meme

Tagged by Ayekah, over at The Soul Sings:

What I was doing 10 years ago: I was 7 months shy of turning forty, my kids were 11, 7, and 3...my goodness, where did the time go? (I don't know what I was doing.)

What I was doing 5 years ago: I was working part-time at a local sporting goods store. My husband was between jobs, we had some financial issues, and I was learning to graciously receive help from others.

What I was doing yesterday: Yesterday, that's easy! I was driving through a part of Louisiana known as Acadiana. These were a few of the things I saw: Rice growing on one side of the road, sugarcane on the other, a dead alligator in the road, palmetto bushes (trees?) growing beside the marsh, the Intracoastal canal, the Mermentau River, and last but not least, a poor turtle, lying on his back in the middle of the road.

5 snacks I enjoy: Boiled cookies, Snicker's bars, M&M cookies, Bold Chex mix, peanut M&Ms

5 songs I know all the lyrics to: probably several "churchy songs", Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star...my memory is terrible, and I can't sing anyway, so why would I need to remember song lyrics??

5 things I would do with a 100 million: A million what? Oh, dollars? First, I'd get some professional advice on what to do with it, second, I'd pay off all our bills, then I'd help some family members, I'd help a few organizations that have helped me, I'd share anonymously with a few friends, I'd invest, and I'd probably try to be pretty tight-lipped about it all.

5 locations to which I would like to run: the woods, Colorado, quiet places, rural places, almost anywhere, I am always game for a trip

5 bad habits I have: chewing my fingernails, thinking too much, eating mindlessly, wasting time, sitting around too much

5 things I like doing: Reading, writing, thinking, I liked traveling when it was all payed for (sales contests won by my husband), I like watching people (am I boring, or what?)

5 things I would never wear: an itsy-btsy, teeny-weenie yellow polka-dot bikini, stilletto heels, really short hair, wool, anything I deem to be too froo-froo

5 T.V. shows I like: Monk, those CSI shows, though they make me mad because they are so obviously unrealistic, I mean, come on, don't their computers ever freeze up, or lose all their information? I don't watch much T.V. anymore.

5 biggest joys of the moment: the feeling that I might survive this life, improving relationships with my three kids, summertime

5 favorite toys: those fake riding horses held up on a frame with four springs, so you felt like you were riding a horse, roller skates, swings, bicycle, oh, you mean, currently? Uh, my computer?

  1. Forget the cookies. I want to know if you saved the turtle?.......

  2. Boiled cookies-- Some people call them drop cookies (come to think of it, they do look like little cow patties, if you get my drift). Cocoa, oatmeal, sugar, peanut butter, oleo (I love that word!), milk, vanilla, you boil it all on the stove and then drop the cookies out on waxed paper, yum, yum, my favorite comfort food.

The turtle-- I knew someone would ask whether I saved the turtle and my momentary lack of compassion would be exposed, I just did not know it would be so soon. Actually, we were well past the turtle when my husband said something about it, and that part of the road is narrow with water on one side and marsh on the other, and I chose not to turn around. I imagine, if he was lucky (the turtle, not my husband), someone came roaring along and their tires "whooshed" the poor fellow back into the upright position.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I saw a turtle that looked like he was running across the road. He was moving fast, but I realized that the vehicle ahead of me had "whooshed" him to the edge of the road. His legs weren't actually "running", they just happened to be out of his shell and they were flapping in the breeze. It was a weird sight to see.

A dead alligator. Wow. Just like that. I can't imagine an seeing an alligator (in any state of existance) on the side of the road. Wow.

  6. No condemnation intended, Annie. I just have a grandsson who always insists we not only pick up the turtle and drive them to safety, but also gets very perturbed should his grandmother run over a snake......64 times or so.

  7. Ah, I see you've already answered the boiled cookie question. We call them "no-bakes" here in Tennessee, too. I think I'm going to START calling them boiled cookies, though, just to freak the locals out. I really enjoyed reading this!
